The Marshmallow Experiment



In the 1960’s Stanford University conducted a series of experiments.

A child was offered a choice between one marshmallow provided immediately or two marshmallows if they waited for a short period, usually 15 minutes, during which the tester left the room and then returned.

In follow-up studies, the researchers found that children who were able to wait longer for the preferred rewards tended to have better life outcomes, as measured by wealth attainment, educational attainment, body mass index, and other life measures.

To put it simply, those who resist instant gratification in favor of long-term outcomes do better in life.

To tell you the truth, up until 2017 I had been playing the short game.

I loved helping patients, I loved practicing medicine, but I found the majority of my time was spent doing repetitive tasks and drowning in a sea of bureaucracy.

How much longer could I keep this up? I wasn't getting any younger, and I wanted to spend more time with family, doing the things I loved.

But I was too scared to try anything new. To plan for my financial future. To start a new business. To invest in my education or hire a coach. To even read a damn book!

This served me in the early stages of patient care but it wasn’t sufficient to take me where I wanted to go.

It’s All About Long Term Planning.

If you don't have a plan for your financial future, you'll become a part of someone else's plan (hint: corporate medicine).

Most doctors go into medicine to help other people, not for the money. But when you stop working so does your income. That's not a scalable business model.

It might work short-term. But in the long-term, your patient care suffers, your mental health suffers, and you end up becoming a "cog in the machine".

A lot of "gurus" out there will start a blog, a podcast, and shout on a stage telling you a "magical loophole" they found that allows you to exploit some rare opportunity in real estate.

This is short-term thinking. Trust me, as enticing as that sounds… You don’t want that.
